General Description
What is Rimonabant?
Following in the footsteps of other diet pills is Rimonabant, one of the latest medications with the ability to have a dramatic effect on a person's weight loss. The drug is intended for use by the overweight or obese (people with a BMI >27) with linked risk factor(s), such as type 2 diabetes or dyslipidaemia. Rimonabant has been shown to be successful in helping these people who have a large amount of weight to loose shed their extra pounds when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
In addition, Rimonabant has also been found to be an effective aid for smokers who want to quit smoking.
How does Rimonabant work?
Rimonabant affects cannabinoid receptors within our bodies’ cells which, amongst other functions, stimulate appetite. Blocking these receptors has been found to be a successful way to suppress the urges we have to eat.
Medical researchers observed that it was the stimulation of the cannabinoid receptors known as CB1, by the active ingredient in marijuana that gave cannabis smokers the desire to eat. Furthermore, that doing the reverse of blocking CB1 receptors rather than stimulating them was effective at curbing hunger.
CB1 receptors are found throughout the body within the Endocannabinoid System (EC System). The EC System is believed to help us regulate our energy levels through food intake and energy expenditure. It is thought that overweight and obese people have an overactive EC system that makes them want to consume excessive amounts of food.
Who manfactures Rimonabant?
Rimonabant was discovered and developed by French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Aventis, the world´s third largest pharmaceutical company after Pfizer and Glaxo Smith Klein.
